How Long is Recovery After Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)?

The abdomen is one of the most commonly listed problem areas. Loose skin, stretch marks, and fat accumulation can affect your confidence. An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck tightens and rejuvenates the abdominal area for a sculpted look. This procedure offers dramatic improvements, especially for those who have been pregnant or lost large amounts of weight.

What is Abdominoplasty or a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty corrects a range of concerns with the abdominal area. These concerns include sagging skin, stretch marks, and separated abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck is a highly customizable procedure that Dr. Brenman will adjust to meet your specific goals. Abdominoplasty can be performed alone or as part of another procedure, like a mommy makeover. People often choose this procedure to address abdominal concerns that do not respond to a healthy lifestyle or non-surgical treatments.

How is Abdominoplasty Performed?

Abdominoplasty takes place under general anesthesia. Dr. Brenman makes an incision across the lower part of your abdomen to access the underlying structures. He will remove excess skin and then repair separated abdominal muscles. He may also use liposuction to remove stubborn fat and create a more sculpted shape. The belly button may be repositioned to a natural position after the skin is tightened. The size of the incision and details of the procedure depend on how much loose skin you have and several other factors.

How Long is Recovery After Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)?

You can expect swelling and discomfort after your procedure, and you will need someone to take you home and ideally assist you for a day or two. We will give you an abdominal support garment to wear that will support and protect the surgical area.  Most people take two to three weeks off work to recover. You must avoid lifting for at least four weeks to avoid straining your abdominal area. Most people can resume their usual level of activity after about six weeks.

What Results Will I See After a Tummy Tuck?

You will notice differences immediately after your tummy tuck. However, swelling will prevent you from appreciating your results at first. You will see continuous improvements as you heal, with your flatter, more toned abdomen appearing within a few weeks. You will notice that your waistline looks more defined, and your abdominal area looks more youthful. Your results will evolve for several months, with full results taking up to a year. We recommend a healthy lifestyle to keep your abdominal area flat and sculpted.

Am I a Good Candidate for Abdominoplasty?

Good candidates for a tummy tuck should be in overall good health. You should have reasonable expectations and plan to take the appropriate amount of time to recover after your procedure. Candidates for abdominoplasty should understand that it is not a weight loss procedure and should not be used to help you lose weight.
