Skin Cancer Reconstruction
What is Skin Cancer Removal and Reconstruction?
Among the most common forms of cancer, skin cancer affects over than 500,000 people each year in the US, and the incidence is rising faster than any other type of cancer. While skin cancers can be found on any part of the body, about 80 percent appear on the face, head, or neck, where they can be disfiguring as well as dangerous.
At The Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery in Philadelphia and Plymouth Meeting, PA, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott A. Brenman specializes in skin cancer removal and reconstruction.
Dr. Brenman is unique in that he offers a comprehensive approach for skin cancer patients: By both removing and reconstructing the treated area, Dr. Brenman can help patients feel more confident about their post-op appearance. Reconstructive techniques, which range from a simple scar revision to a complex transfer of tissue flaps from elsewhere on the body, often repair damaged tissue, rebuild body parts, and restore most patients to improved appearance and function.

Candidates for Skin Cancer Removal and Reconstruction
The best candidates for skin cancer removal and reconstruction have a cancerous or precancerous lesion that can be directly removed from the skin’s surface. These skin cancer removal and reconstruction patients should have realistic expectations for their procedure, as some scarring can be minimized but not totally removed.
How Does It Work?
The approach to skin cancer removal and reconstruction is entirely personalized to the patient, meaning no two procedures are alike. Dr. Brenman will work with you during the consultation period to determine which reconstruction technique works best with your type of skin lesion removal. For example, a small removal may only require scar treatments, while the removal of a larger lesion could call for transferring healthy skin flaps to hide the resulting scars.
Results*
Results largely depend on the type of reconstructive surgery that’s used to minimize your scarring. Some results are visible right away, while others may take up to a year to see final results.
Recovery*
Again, recovery will depend on the type of removal and reconstructive procedure that’s selected for your particular skin lesion. Dr. Brenman will work with you to ensure you’re properly prepared for your post-op recovery period.
