What Age Should You Get a Facelift?

Your skin loses collagen and elastin as you age, causing skin laxity, lines and wrinkles, and loss of definition. A facelift tightens the skin and removes wrinkles for a more youthful appearance. Alone or in combination with other procedures, a facelift can make you look years younger.

What is a Facelift (Rhytidectomy)?

A rhytidectomy or facelift uses hidden incisions to lift and tighten the skin. Dr. Brenman performs a short scar facelift that minimizes the size of the incisions needed. A facelift is a definitive solution for people with moderate to severe loose skin and sagging jowls. Dr. Brenman often performs a neck lift with a facelift to remove excess fat under the chin and jawline for balanced, contoured results.

What Age Should You Get a Facelift?

Most people under the age of 40, and many older than this, can treat their lines, wrinkles, and mild skin laxity with non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments. Many surgeons recommend a facelift for anyone in their 40’s, 50’s, or 60’s with moderate to severe loose skin, jowls, and wrinkles. During your consultation, Dr. Brenman will discuss your treatment options and if now is the right time for you to get a facelift.

How Does a Rhytidectomy Work?

Dr. Brenman performs a rhytidectomy by making small incisions around and behind the ears. Once healed, these incisions will be almost entirely invisible. He will lift the skin, remove excess skin, tighten the neck and facial muscles, and remove fat from the neck and jowls. A facelift takes three to four hours under light sedation or general anesthesia

What Can a Facelift Treat?

A facelift makes you look dramatically younger, but it can also look natural in the hands of an experienced surgeon. You may have a facelift, especially in combination with a neck lift, to treat these concerns:

  • Loose skin
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Deep creases and folds
  • Sagging jowls
  • Excessive neck and jowl fat
  • Loss of facial contours

A rhytidectomy treats many signs of aging with one procedure, making it an effective way to turn back the clock on your facial appearance. Results can last for many years, although the aging process will continue.

What is Recovery Like From a Facelift?

Immediately after surgery, you will have bandages around your face and head, and you may have drains to remove the fluid. After the bandages come off, you will wear a supportive chin strap for a few weeks. Your sutures will dissolve as your incisions heal. Most people feel like they can return to work and socialize after two to three weeks.

What Results Will I See With A Facelift?

You will notice improvements immediately after your facelift, but you will have some swelling that takes several weeks to resolve. It can take up to six months for your residual swelling to fade and your full results to become visible.

This visit was a pleasure! Dr. Brenman thoroughly explained my options and did seem rushed. He answered all my questions and made me comfortable with making my decision. Gina was friendly and helpful in facilitating scheduling etc. I feel confident in my choice.
