How Does Botox Work?

Do you want your face to have a more youthful appearance? Are you looking for a non-invasive solution to fine lines and wrinkles? Then Botox could be the ideal solution for you. Here at The Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery, Dr. Scott Brenman can help you to look younger with a Botox treatment.

How Botox Works

Botox is the brand name for Botulinum toxin, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Although technically a toxin, when used correctly by a qualified professional, Botox has the capability to help treat a number of conditions including fine lines, wrinkles, excessive sweating, and eyelid spasms. Most commonly used for cosmetic purposes, Botox works by disrupting the nerves that stimulate muscle contraction by preventing the release of acetylcholine and causing temporary paralysis. This intervention allows the muscles of the face or other treatment areas to relax, thus allowing the skin to become smooth.

Botox Benefits

The most common use of Botox is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, such as frown lines and crows feet that appear on the face. Although the Botox treatment is not able to stop the aging process completely, it can help to restore a more youthful appearance, enabling patients to look the age they feel and to be more confident with their appearance.  Beyond cosmetic applications, Botox is also used to treat a number of medical conditions that are related to muscles, such as eyelid spasms and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), helping patients to reduce their symptoms and to regain their self-confidence.  Typically, a Botox treatment only takes 30 minutes to administer and will last between 3-4 months, depending on the treatment chosen, meaning that patients will need to get 3-4 treatments per year to sustain the effect in the long term. Most patients see noticeable differences within just 4-7 days of injection, and as a non-invasive treatment, Botox also has the added benefit of having virtually no downtime, meaning that patients can get back to their normal daily activities the same day or at most, after 24 hours of rest.

Am I a Candidate for Botox?

Because of its accessibility, versatility, and effectiveness, Botox remains one of the most popular anti-aging treatments available but it isn’t suitable for everyone. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a neurological disease, or are under the age of 18 should not use Botox and should seek alternative treatments. If you are looking to treat facial lines and wrinkles with Botox, then you are an ideal candidate if you have mild to moderate crows feet or forehead wrinkles that are made worse when you smile or change your facial expression. For hyperhidrosis, there are some other non-invasive treatments available such as miraDry, which uses heat energy to permanently destroy sweat glands, therefore to find out if Botox is the right choice for your hyperhidrosis, it is best to speak with Dr. Brenmon directly to discuss the options available to you.   This visit was a pleasure!
